Taking the plunge

Today was our last day of pre-hike logistics before heading to Lake Tahoe tomorrow. Most of the organisation aspect was done yesterday so we had a relatively easy day today.

We started by catching the hotel shuttle to the local US Post Office. It was a huge building on the outside but completely tiny in the inside making me wonder what they were doing with all that extra space.

We looked like a pair of hobos walking in with our shopping bags so we ignored the startled glances and went to find the largest box we could. It was so large I probably could have posted myself to Tahoe City so we settled for the next one down.

The lady at the counter (Rowena) was very helpful and in no time at all our package was on its way to Tahoe City. I think the staff here were fantastic and very friendly.

Feeling victorious after our success at the post office, we wandered back to the hotel. That was when I realised the World Cup game with England was on so we stopped off at the hotel bar briefly to watch the end.

The game was looking quite boring until the last minute when Harry Kane scored a well placed header. Couldn’t have done it better myself. In fact, I couldn’t have done it at all.

We then headed to Avis to pick up our rental car. We ended up with a Chevy (of course) which was pretty easy to drive so it made safely navigating the California roads back to the hotel as easy as it could be.

Hard work over for the day, we headed over to the local water park to enjoy some California sun. After emptying my bank account to pay the extortionate entrance fee, we headed in to see what we were made of.

Ben suggested we go on the Break Point Plunge as a first ride. After realising this ride involves standing in a tube whilst the floor gives way sending you plunging vertically to an almost certain end, I casually suggested we try the lazy river instead.

Ben was having none of it and I climbed the steps hanging on for dear life as six year olds bounded past me headed for the top. I stood knees knocking at the top and then the floor gave way and I shot down and was spat out with little dignity at the bottom.

Having enough of that, we headed for an easier ride. A chatty six year old asked us where we were from. He also guessed my age at 20 and Ben’s as far older. No doubt it must have been my rogue-ish youthful looks which had confused the little boy. Needless to say Ben scowled at him the rest of the way up the steps.

After realising the average age was about 11, we decided it was time to act our age and head back to the hotel.

We decided to head out to the movies for our last night before starting the trail. The cinema was called Lux Cinemas and lived up to its name.

The cinema had wood paneling inside and really comfortable leather seats. You press a button on your seat and a waiter comes to take your order. Australian cinemas take note!

Tomorrow our time here comes to an end and we start the Tahoe Rim Trail. It will be a real shock to the system after spending the last few days living it up and eating junk.

We will have an early start tomorrow with a three hour drive to Tahoe City. The trail beckons!

Your British sense of humour is hillarious! So much so that I have tears in my eyes, but that is also partly due to a bad cold I am having at the moment. Blessings to both of you as you start your challenging walk tomorrow, enjoy, but also be careful at all times! We know you can do it! Ellen and Henk
