Pemberton to Donnelly River – April 2018

As part of my training hikes for my upcoming Tahoe Rim Trail/John Muir Trail hikes in the US, I will be doing a week on the Bibbulmun Track starting from tomorrow between Pemberton and Donnelly River.

Pemberton is a town in the South West of Western Australia and was named after the original settler Pemberton Walcott being founded in 1862. We will be walking north along the track towards Donnelly River, an old timber mill town.

Screen Shot 2018-04-01 at 10.02.43 amThis is a distance of around 109 km so it is fairly straightforward and we will be done early on the 5th day. The longest day will be Day 1 when we will have a 25km walk but, again, nothing too bad.

The trail through this section is the start of the Karri forests as you head south from Donnelly River.

Most walkers on the Bibb Track will have been walking southwards as this is the most popular direction. At this point, they will have been walking through 400km of jarrah forest so will be well and truly ready for a break from this. The karri forests are truly spectacular and, whilst this section has plenty of karri, the most beautiful forests are probably between Pemberton and Walpole.

I will blog daily over the course of this section hike to give people a sense of the forests of the south west. The trail north from Pemberton passes through some great spots on its way to Donnelly River Village so it should be a good hike!
